- It's not difficult to spot Scott Moncrieff's influences—Moodymann and Jimpster are surely among them. It's therefore no surprise that Jimpster's Delusions Of Grandeur feels like the perfect home for the Sheffield man's brand of fat, warm deep house.
Please Don't Slip, Trip Or Fall Off is led out by "Girl I Know It," a track packed with congas, hi-hats and kicks so muddy they nearly disappear in the mix. Moncrieff reduces the tempo on "Blowin' My Mind," cracking open the Rhodes and crunchy, granular percussion, but it's the shuddering "Be With Me" that leaves the biggest impression. Dnae's raw vocal meanders through a bumping groove forged from off-kilter beats, skittish bass and the kind of reverb-laden horns you hear on mid-'90s hip-hop tracks. Despite the pivotal part his hometown has played in electronic music history, you can't shake the feeling that if this were the work of some auteur from Detroit, Thatmanmonkz would receive wider recognition from the house community.
