José Padilla - Solito

  • If Ibiza had a Music Hall Of Fame, José Padilla would surely be one of its inaugural inductees. He's the man who spanned the gap between the mid-'70s disco-era Ibiza and the first wave of UK DJs—Rampling, Oakenfold and Holloway—who would place the White Island at the centre of the clubbing universe. Solito marks another step in a return to the public eye that has seen him once again playing at Café del Mar, the spot where he made his name. Working alongside Mark Barrott from International Feel, a current guardian of the Balearic sound that Padilla pioneered, "Solito" is washed in Middle Eastern vibes and peppered lightly with congas and trippy flutes, a sinuous acidic bassline wrapping around its belly. Bubble Club's "In Loving Memory Mix" picks up the pace a smidge with mild kicks, grand prog rock chords and spacey percussion. German artist Wolf Müller isn't particularly prolific, but as his Balztanz EP showed this year, he has the chops to produce epic music. His two remixes, released on a separate 12-inch, aren't dramatically different. The "Water Mix" is much more in step with the Balearic tendencies of Padilla's original, with its soft, underlying hum and twinkling synths, while the "Water Dance" mix cranks up the wiry live bass and percussive elements.
