Javeon - Intoxicated

  • "Intoxicated" is the latest pop trinket to fall off the impressive PMR assembly line, and here Julio Bashmore does for Javeon what he did for Jessie Ware with "If You're Never Gonna Move." Bashmore's instrumental is airy, caressed by soft-rock guitars and driven by a beat so light it feels like a thermal updraft. Javeon keeps his half of the deal, and though his love-as-a-drug metaphor is beyond tired, his falsetto slips between tender and urgent, offering something a little sexier than the usual PMR fare. The remixes attempt to bring "Intoxicated" to the dance floor, but the original's candlelit intimacy is half the fun. DJ Q is the best fit—in fact, his remix, with its chunky drums and repetitive vocal snippets, sounds more like a Bashmore production than the original (at least until his bassline comes in to rough things up). TC turns in a perfunctory drum & bass version that practically grovels for radio play, while The Magician's lumpy Balearic remix is an awkward fit for Javeon's vocal. Sometimes a ballad is just a ballad.
