The Drifter - Again

  • Each release so far on Maeve has been as essential as the last, which is hardly surprising considering the people behind it—the label is run by The Drifter, Baikal and Mano Le Tough. This EP, the first new material from The Drifter since 2012's Lovers for Permanent Vacation, more than maintains the label's standards, with two elongated deep house cuts that bubble with ideas and atmosphere. "Again" is sparky, warm and hugely immersive. Its ten-minute duration gives the feel of a stretched-out journey, with the gentle, springy bassline periodically joined by glowing pads and flashing keys and effects. "Blocks" is similar, but ups the percussive ante a bit with its blocky beat and sharp claps and hi-hats. The pads and high notes are still there, however, creating a similarly atmospheric impression to "Again" despite pointing more forcefully towards the floor.
