Flava D - In The Dance

  • Effortlessly blending garage, bassline and grime with an unhealthy dollop of sugar, Flava D makes pop-friendly dance music that dons a tough look. It's a street-smart mix that's made her the rising star of London's Butterz crew, and like most of the label's roster, melody is her music's biggest asset. But as the title of In The Dance hints, this one is all about the floor. With its chilly strings and gun samples, "In The Dance" is massive but nimble. It slips into ornate sections before breaking out into a full-on sprint. Stacked with timpanis that slam like boulders, it's like an action movie score streamlined into a rude bassline stormer. "New Era" sits on the more abrasive side, with a bassline that stubbornly adheres to everything else around it—only the drums cut through in a deftly swung garage pattern. "Groggy," a UK house-style banger that fixes itself on a wormy bassline, finishes the EP on a more straightforward note. Even this one feels unusually addictive. And that, really, is the secret to Flava D's success: her music is so energetic that it's hard not to get sucked in.
