Helena Hauff - Return To Disorder

  • Actio Reactio, Helena Hauff's debut, was one of last year's more compelling dance releases. On that EP, the parallels between her productions and her DJ sets were easy to draw. Hauff is a resident at Golden Pudel's Birds And Other Instruments night, and Actio Reactio flitted similarly between techno, electro and acid. It was an exciting release, and Return To Disorder is even more energetic and unpredictable. A darting bassline is ballast for the high-octane acid line and raw-edged claps and kicks of "Spirals Of Smoke Drifting From Soot Stained Chimneys." Synth lines frantically squiggle, and the forward momentum they create with the percussion and bassline is intense. "Sea Shore Acid" also has an in-the-moment feel that's similar to Hauff's DJing style. Its silvery acid lines fizz haphazardly, while a relentless bassline and percussive onslaught give the track its backbone. The noisy opening passage of "Blast!" segues into a thumping club track, and though "Message From Filippo" initially sounds slower and less gripping than the rest of the EP, it becomes increasingly less stable. Even within its tight rhythmic framework, disorder is given free reign.
