D'Marc Cantu - Long Weekend

  • Does the world really need more acid? It's ironic that a sound embraced because it sounded so unholy, so otherworldly, has become a staple that even those who've never set foot inside a club would recognise. D'Marc Cantu's latest journey back in time makes a case for the defence. On "1Lb Of Flesh" his 303 is so demonic as to sound almost novel. As it gurgles and growls through snare rolls and piston hats, bolted down by a sub that reverberates in your guts, you picture a creature caged and trying to burst free, rather than a 30-year-old array of wires and chips. "Acid Test" has none of that snarl. It's a perfectly serviceable slab of wiggly electro-techno that could as easily have been made in 1988 as today. Fans of throwback jams should lap it up, but it's not going to quicken the pulses of those who like their techno to face forwards. "Long Weekend" is equally regressive, this time channelling the subs and pads of Larry Heard although without reaching his heart-stirring heights. And that's the trouble with reworking the past: if you can't improve on it, the comparison doesn't look kind.
