Ducerey Ada Nexino - Cycles, Children & Islands EP

  • Over the past half decade or so, Yuji Kondo has been crafting dense, cerebral rhythms under his given name and the alias Ducerey Ada Nexino (he's also half of the duo Steven Porter). He always steers well clear of the obviously ominous marches and greyscale palettes ever present in today's techno scene. Repeat appearances on Serbian label Genesa have now led to this hard-hitting EP. Heavy, broken-beat drums abound on the three vinyl originals, along with plenty of hissing ambiance, but as intense as they are, they're also curiously catchy. First up is the most peak-time-ready track, "School Phosphene," whose steam-rolling attack is directed by a shrieking, instantly memorable lead riff. "Beneath The Kitchen Faucet" and "Mouth Of Which" both loop what sound like short, re-sculpted vocal samples in with gritty machine funk and high-tech musique concrète, further emphasizing Kondo's penchant for building tension with layers of detail. "Mouth Of Which" is my favorite thing here—it's just a little more laidback than the others, and manages to sound at once sinister and seductive. Genesa head Scalameriya turns in a lean and (relatively) lighter remix of "Mouth Of Which" that features a long drop in the middle. A digital-only track from Kondo, "Moon Phase Letterpress," shows him putting aside his percussion to further indulge his abstract tendencies, but the real winners are the other sharp, focused cuts.
