Golden Teacher - Party People / Love

  • If you slept on last year's Bells From The Deep End and Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night EPs by Glasgow six-piece Golden Teacher then you need to catch up on two of 2013's essential releases. The inspired fruit of improvised sessions at Glasgow's increasingly legendary Green Door Studio, these records were a yelping, impossibly funky whirlwind of house, Afrobeat, punk-funk, electro and several-dozen other styles. Given the bewlidered-but-delighted buzz those records and the band's extraordinary live shows have created, it's no surprise that this third EP is cut from the same cloth. Like many Golden Teacher tracks, "Love" is based on elastic, thwacking percussion and a flurry of sighs, grunts and yelps. Suicide-style vocals, headrushing synth digressions, cowbells and a relentless bass groove complete an unhinged eight-minutes of music that's destined to join "Dante & Pilgrim" and "Rashomon" among fans' favourites. "Party People" throws together Auntie Flo-style bongos, gigantic slabs of bass and more street-lunatic vocals. "Silver Chalice," meanwhile, achieves a spectral quality while still being mercilessly propelled by irresistible percussion. It closes another spectacular offering from a band who're yet to put a foot wrong.
