Anthony Collins - Natural History Exhibit

  • In a recent interview, Francis Harris described his production partner Anthony Collins as "the club-ready one, who can whip up bangers in no time." Indeed, since he started releasing music in 2006, Collins has been a prolific purveyor of rolling grooves, with outings on Freak N Chic, Mule Electronic and Vakant. His latest outing, Natural History Exhibit "F", is the continuation of a series on his own Scissor & Thread sub-label Natural History. Based on his trademark combo of leaden kicks and chugging basslines, "Panther Lies" and "Union Block" capture Collins at his simple best. The former is the more seductive, adorning a roomy analogue groove with touches of soft piano. Three minutes in, the beat falls away, leaving only a gently skipping synth; following an elongated pause, the drums slam back in, this time with a new, fuller melody. It's a breathtaking moment. "Union Block," while not as striking, is meaner. Bell-toll synths present an extended moment of poignancy, but really it's the frenetic hi-hats and rampant bassline that give the track its peak-time personality.
