Jose Pouj - Stealth Fragments EP

  • Jose Pouj's record label, Injected Poison, has been steadily climbing the ranks since its inception in 2008. For remix support on the Stealth Fragments EP, the Madrid-based Spaniard enlists Jonas Kopp, Luis Ruiz and his fellow townsman Kwartz. The result is an EP in which pinpoint-accurate rhythms and the judicious use of reverb and delay give a powerful sense of atmosphere and motion. Pouj's original is the most direct, a precisely engineered steamer whose tense synths clear up after the drop, leaving us in a darker place. Jonas Kopp's contribution is the most inventive, with a swirling bassline and white noise FX competing with each other. Luis Ruiz, meanwhile, takes a headier approach. He employs a snarling lead that hangs loosely off the drums, later adding a snakelike writhing that notches up the weird factor even more. Kwartz puts more money on the murky sub-range, and leaves more space in the rest of the track without letting off the gas too much. There are no particularly strong signifiers in Stealth Fragments, meaning it would work best for techno DJs who treat their records as tools.
