Munk & Rebolledo - Surf Smurf

  • The pairing of Gomma label boss Munk and the Pachanga Boy's Rebolledo seems so natural that the only surprise about this release is that it didn't happen sooner. Both are known for their irreverent streaks, and their paths have crossed frequently in in the past, so this frothy EP was probably always on the cards. The package includes a Munk version and a Rebolledo version of the title track, both of which are based on the same hazy, surf's-up bass guitar. Munk's version pairs it with clean drums and flamboyantly honking sax to produce an immediate, punchy whole. Rebelledo's take on "Surf Smurf" is double the length of Munk's, and is about as brooding as it could be while still being based on that good-times bassline. It murmurs to life slowly, enveloping the guitar in a fug of industrial clangs and far-off bass, and continues like that for 12 dubby minutes. "You Got It" is presumably a joint effort. It pairs a croaking acid bassline with another hip-swinging guitar line and a sunny, soulful vocal, completing a package that's essentially a throwaway bit of fun.
