Miltiades - Stmete EP

  • Athens producer Miltiades emerged last year with epk.x, which outlined a distinctive and impressively fully-formed deep house aesthetic. His latest, the Stmete EP, marks a move from the young Greek label Nous to the more established Echovolt. Sonically, though, we're on more or less identical terrain. Like their predecessors, the three originals here consist of warm, methodical percussion, gently eroded pads and not much else. That's no bad thing though; if anything, the unchanging nature of Miltiades' output suits its meditative mood. The title track trudges along at a languid 107 BPM, its interweaving percussion loops giving it a feeling of thoughtful intricacy. "Wa4.sun" is brisker but equally calm—you'll find yourself noticing the way its chords drift in and out of a gentle distorted fog. Both, in spite of their softness, maintain a certain icy poise; "Da3w.U," on the other hand, pulses with warmth, and is, by a small margin, probably the best thing here. Finally, Gifted & Blessed (as The Reflektor) reimagines the title track as smoky hardware techno. At going-on 140 BPM it's a neat counterpoint to the languorous vibe found elsewhere, though the groove is a bit too stodgy to achieve liftoff.
