Eduardo De La Calle - Epilogue #2

  • Analog Solutions is one of the most underrated techno labels of the last few years. Since 2011, it's released a steady stream of sleek and colorful EPs, all by Eduardo De La Calle, the label's proprietor. Many of them pay homage to early house and techno, sometimes overtly so, sampling classics like Recloose's "Soul Clap" or Underground Resistance's "Transitions." But what makes them memorable is De La Calle's signature sound: his best records have a highly visual, mind-bending quality that's cold yet inviting, strange yet unassuming (see the half-ambient, sax-laden Analog Grooves #3 for a recent example). On Epilogue 2, De La Calle is particularly loyal to his influences. A1 and B1 are pure Detroit, the former with a nervous melody layered over its driving beat, the latter with a spoken-word hook taken from a Moodymann interview ("I go home and I fuck that motherfucking MPC all fucking night"). The A2 has more of a Basic Channel vibe, with a single dubbed out chord writhing over a plodding, sub-heavy beat. B2, with its soaring strings and New Wave drum fills, is where we get the most of De La Calle's personal flavor. Honestly, we could have done with more of it. All of these tracks are, as usual, elegantly produced, but they lack the spark of individuality that characterizes Analog Solution's best records. Despite his undying respect for the classic techno cannon, De La Calle sounds best when he's doing his own thing.
