Tirzah - I'm Not Dancing

  • Tirzah's debut EP, which is now seeing a vinyl release after its initial digital outing in August, sets her apart from her labelmates on Greco-Roman. Produced by Micachu (of Micachu & The Shapes fame), the soulful singer's music is charmingly ramshackle, the antithesis to the label's radio-friendly polish—but the strong songcraft is still there. Her unassuming debut, I'm Not Dancing, is a memorable 11 minutes that makes a far more lasting impression than its meagre ingredients would suggest. The title track is almost defiant, with its trashcan percussion and chords that sound like a jug band. Its simple refrain is combative: "I'm not dancing / I'm fighting." It's quaint yet heavy, and if you're familiar with Micachu you'll recognize the coyly punk vibe she goes for here. "Inside Out" is more assertive, and better shows off Tirzah's vocal range—here she has more room to breathe, and her voice easily carries the track above a bassline and a solitary sample, which traces out a countermelody. After the brief vocal collage "Ooo Never," Tirzah really shines with the aptly titled "Slow Jam," a smouldering number that recalls Prince's most barebones minimal funk, but with a charming naiveté.
