- Though his 2010 EP The Only Way Up played an early role in shaping the Night Slugs sound, Egyptrixx is the label's odd man out. He lives in Toronto (not London), his music is less angular than most stuff by Bok Bok or Jam City, and he's not as prolific as his peers. Still, Egyptrixx is arguably the most distinctive of the lot, releasing music that's more psychedelic than it is dancey, especially his 2011 album Bible Eyes. After a period of relative quiet, David Psutka returns with A/B Til Infinity, a restless record that finds itself on the same archaeological dig through grime aesthetics that the rest of Night Slugs have been undertaking lately. The artifacts he finds, however, are wholly unfamiliar.
A/B Til Infinity is a collection of compact suites that rise and fall with the splendour of a film score. "Axis [Intro]" and the title track spend the LP's first five minutes biding their time before fading out with a single puff. The distant sirens of "Bad Boy" preface the harrowing "Adult," which lets out wide arcs of synth and brutally attacks them with needlepoint percussion. The gasps of "Disorbital" die out to make way for the techno-inspired "Water," which runs into the dejected limp of "My Life Is Vivid, My Eyes Are Open."
And so on. A/B Til Infinity takes full liberty of the album format's room for experimentation. It reduces itself to silence with every descent, so that any momentum quickly dissipates. It shares an attention-deficit fragmentation with Jam City's Classical Curves, but where that one rushed headlong into each fascinating new experiment, this one takes deep breaths and measured steps. It's a record more about sound design and structure, an abstract deconstruction of Night Slugs' sleek chrome aesthetic.
