Jimmy Edgar - Mercurio

  • If you've seen Detroit's favourite sex fiend play out in the last year, you'll know he's been through a metamorphosis. Where his older music was more funk than anything else—slow, sensual and full of twisty vocal melodies—he's now on a house and techno attack. Maybe it's living in Berlin, or maybe he's exploring his Motor City roots. Either way, it's no coincidence that he called a track "Strike," and his second release for his Ultramajic label brings out the big guns. The vast collection of hardware Edgar uses remains the same, so "Ultraviolet" sounds like last year's Majenta flattened with a hammer. A single chord splinters like copper wire over the militant drum beat, a simple but futuristic sound. "Qlinda" has some of the old Edgar charm—this time the chords are beveled to a pearlescent shine, there's the barest hint of vocals, and the track slips into a slinky breakdown halfway through that recalls the seductive XXX days. "Mercurio" wraps things up with the most bash-you-over-the-head thing Edgar has ever done. You can imagine him stomping along with every kick drum, which hits hard but retains all the dynamism of his best work. And while Edgar's new direction might not be as engaging to the electro heads, he at least pulls it off.
