Tunnel Signs - Dream City

  • Sydney-born producer Ash Moses, AKA Tunnel Signs, has taken the best part of two years to follow up his debut release, the Daniel Avery-remixed "Sun." This EP's opener, "Prism," is a good guide to the developments Moses has made since then. Where "Sun" was reasonably straightforward machine-funk with hints of urban darkness, "Prism" dives headlong into the EBM/minimal wave influences in which Moses has recently immersed himself. It pairs a rumbling bassline that's pure Front 242/Nitzer Ebb with an '80s sci-fi synth line, setting up an atomosphere of foreboding funkiness that's maintained throughout the release. "Cold Future" (a lost cold wave band name if ever I heard one) has a flitting, rueful synth line and deep-in-the-mix bass guitar flourishes. The dominant motif on "Overpass" is a swooping bass synth, with another tightly-wound EBM bassline and stark percussion further signposting the inspirations behind the record. "Cylinder" kicks off as ethereal electronica before a stomping bass riff drags it back towards the floor. Marc Houle's remix softens these parts in characteristically subtle style to round out the package.
