Osunlade - Dionne

  • In the wake of 2011's "Envision" and its Âme remix, which became one of the biggest house hits of the year, St Louis-born veteran Osunlade publicly "quit" the house scene to enjoy other musical forms. This ultra-limited seven-inch speaks to the tranquil Greek-island existence he has chosen for himself, but its title track still fits into a certain kind of house template, albeit a more peaceful, less Panorama Bar-ready one. "Dionne" is a sweeping, feel-good cut that blends sunny strings and a soulful house vocal taken from Dionne Warwick's "Walk The Way You Talk." The comforting sound of traditional Nigerian batá drums, an instrument that has an integral place in the Ifa religion of which Osunlade is a priest, sits in the mix. "What Gets You High" is a supremely laid-back bossa tribute that pairs a slinky piano melody with pattering drums and a breathy, jovial vocal that repeats the track's title. An incongruously summery release for this time of year, perhaps, but new music from Osunlade is a welcome arrival whatever the weather.
