Myles Sergé - Inside the Box

  • Myles Sergé's recent two-tracker for his own (MS) label, Perpetual Motion, was appropriately named. Each side pushed repetition to its limit, with only the occasional hi-hat adjustment letting you know you weren't listening to an infinite loop. His latest, for Berlin's Bright Sounds, is equally laconic and equally hypnotising. Despite its limited palette, Inside The Box still covers a lot of ground. "Building Blocks" is bumping Detroit minimal with a choked synth line that slightly overextends the loop, suggesting change each time it resets. It's a mesmerising trick that's employed regularly by Robert Hood in his post-Underground Resistance work, and it leaves you disoriented, lost in the rhythm. "Inside The Box" and the excellently named "Welcome To The Wonderful World Of Trash" are more condensed, both bolting a warped stab to percussion that, like a treadmill, rolls on without a destination. The former's occasional deviations from its loop come from a rippling bass so deep it works more as rhythm than melody, while the latter occasionally throws a filter onto what constitutes a synth riff, so it shrieks out into foggy reverb. All three make serviceable DJ tools, but there's an energy lurking in each that, used judiciously, lifts them beyond merely functional.
