Geena - Surowych Utworow EP

  • Despite being only five releases deep, Parisian imprint Antinote has already managed to cover synth-heavy electronica (Syracuse), glitchy house (Albinos) and grim warehouse techno (lueke). The label's latest offering, four vintage-sounding house tracks from local producer Geena, was described by label co-owner Gwen Jamois in a recent RA feature as their "first DJ-friendly record." From the opening bars of "AKA," the EP's standout track, it's clear Surowych Utworow is only going to bolster Antinote's reputation. Bright, squelchy 303s form a catchy core, supported by zesty percussion and a plump bassline. On "Andre The Giant," Geena tightens the kicks, lending a thumping peak-time pulse to the track's otherwise serene mood. "IKO"'s surging bassline and sharp, sweeping pads ensure it's cut out for house and techno heads alike. "Curd" sees us out in style, aligning strident synths with another dose of low-slung propulsion. Though their first example of club-centric fare, in Geena Antinote has found a producer that values musicality just as much as they do.
