Plaster - Monad XV

  • Plaster's induction into Stroboscopic Artefacts' Monad series makes a lot of sense. Over its 15 releases, the more abstract arm of Lucy's label has hosted experiments in techno's outer reaches by the likes of Xhin, Go Hiyami and Lakker. Considering Gianclaudio Moniri and Giuseppe Carlini's knack for making coal-black records that sound like Autechre on a comedown, they seem a natural fit. Monad EPs from Tommy Four Seven and Perc had the feel of techno artists being freed from dance floor constraints, but Plaster seem to approach from the opposite direction. Aside from "Libra," all of these tracks have kicks that treat the one-beat as if it owes them money. "Quasar" crackles around a long-decaying bass note with the thunder of war drums, and its sense of foreboding is matched in "Uret," where the kicks are driven so hard they start to collapse into each other. "Tangle" is, for Plaster, more restrained, even as its low-end bursts through clouds of distorted static. This is techno at its very darkest.
