Disco Nihilist - Journey To The End Of The Night EP

  • This EP is the first on the new Don't Be Afraid sub-label, DBA Special Editions, which has been set up as a home for "your classic 'club use only' cuts: quality body music for big soundsystems from the producers we admire." The gimmick-free, all-analogue approach of cult American acid producer Mike Taylor, AKA Disco Nihilist, makes a natural fit for the imprint's first release. "Late Nights" melds a noodly bass synth to insistent drums, handclaps and a classic acid riff. "Midnight To St. John" is more ominous, with a tottering, druggy bassline pierced by a dizzily atmospheric synth line. "Money Don't Matter 2 Night" is a spacier iteration with similar ingredients. All three will get crowds in sweaty basements moving, and they fulfil their stated purpose with aplomb. "St. John's Drums" adheres rigidly to the "club use only" approach. It's a simple kick-drums-and-hi-hats DJ tool that you probably wouldn't listen to at home more than a couple of times.
