Various - Bosconi Stallions Athena

  • Having crept into the wider electronic music consciousness these past 12 months, Italy's Bosconi Records now brings its eye-catching Stallions series to a close. Designed to showcase the label's burgeoning local and international roster, Athena rounds out the four-part run with an EP heavy on homegrown artists. First up, however, is Detroit duo The Oliverwho Factory, who debuted on the label in 2011 with Take Me Away. Returning with the altogether more incisive "Mind Free," the pair place thumping kicks beneath an initial flurry of 303s, which soon mutate to form driving stabs and infectious female cries. Nick Anthony Simoncino opts for more tranquil climes, keeping things pumping while delicate synths flicker amidst dreamy pads. Nicholas, who is best known for his '90s-indebted house fare, turns out a surprisingly techy effort in "From Somewhere Else." Layering sharp synth lines over heavily swung drums, the track is something new for Nicholas but it feels assured. Label boss Ennio Colaci sees us out with the deep, rolling "Hinterland." As echoed pads simmer over a clicking beat, Colaci shows that those in charge at Bosconi are not only seasoned curators but also production talents in their own right.
