Paul Woolford - Untitled

  • Paul Woolford has shot off in so many directions that even his Special Request side project, once dedicated to jungly hardcore rave-ups, has become completely unpredictable. His new one on Hotflush is the first of 2013 under his real name, and it spreads two very different tracks across an impressive slab of wax. Both tracks on Untitled harbour the big-room sound that has come to define Hotflush. "Untitled" almost hearkens back to Woolford's mid-'00s days, albeit with his recent concrete aesthetic. Like the best of his work, it's got a tough heart with a soft core, revolving around a vocal sample so bubblegum that it tempers his slamming piano line, drifting between techno beatdown and hands-in-the-air moments. "Overload" falls more to the Special Request side of things, drilling a vocal sample over old-school breaks and burned-out percussion samples. It shows that no matter what vibe he's aiming for, Woolford can still nail it almost every single time.
