The Black 80s - Give Me Something

  • Since it started in 2010, the label arm of the Air London booking agency has done a neat job of representing the modern British and wider European house scene. For its 11th release, however, it looks beyond the more current sounds of Jordan Peak and Session Victim to veteran house head Hollis P. Monroe and his partner Overnite, who together form The Black 80s. The duo's new EP presents two mixes of "Give Me Something." Overnite's take is a deep and seductive affair, stroking humming synths across a buoyant kick and bass combo. Crucially, it provides a strong platform for the track's sensuous lead vocal, supporting the moving lyrics with a mixture of firm claps and firefly synths. It's evocative deep house at its very best. Hollis P. Monroe ventures a little further into the wilderness with a flicker of dance floor skip that's tailored to more upbeat pursuits. Though sparky, the emotive thrust of the vocal is lost amidst the clutter, further highlighting the simple power of Overnite's interpretation.
