Nubian Mindz - Ghost Dreams

  • Ed Davenport's first addition to the Counterchange roster is the long-serving Colin Lindo. Originally known for his dour drum & bass as Alpha Omega in the mid-to-late '90s, Lindo went on to become a key player in the postmillennial nu-jazz scene as Nubian Mindz. Since then, he's released on Delsin and Rush Hour, but his profile seems to have gradually faded over the years. Positioned somewhere between his stark designs for Archive and his deeper excursions on Irma, "New You" suspends elongated chords and peaked stabs over low-slung drums. The title track is weightier, combining a Detroit futurism aesthetic with rigid garage steps. The enigmatic Aardvarck delivers a strong dub mix of "New You." Initially, it's uncharacteristically straightforward for the Dutchman, with the emphasis placed on contrasting tonal depth. At the halfway point, though, the percussion lifts, leading into a superb, piston-like beatdown that once again reaffirms Aardvarck's understated mastery.
