- It's 20 years since Robin "Jaydee" Albers released the breakbeat-infused house classic "Plastic Dreams." "Payback" may not be quite as well known, but a high-profile fan of it, Maceo Plex, remixes the track and offers Albers the opportunity to release some new material.
"Pulsate," clattering along in a blur of rising synth wooshes and reverberating bass notes, is defiantly old school—maybe too much so for some. Maceo Plex's remix of "Payback" adopts a finger-clicking swagger from the first note, buttressed by a tautly wound bassline, before heading for a dubby exit.
Steve Rachmad adorns "Pulsate" with a steam train rhythm and chattering keys. Halfway through Rachmad lets rip with grumbling low-end that conjures memories of Funk D'Void's techno classic "Diablo." Albers then gets his teeth into "Pulsate" again with his "Mainstage" rework, injecting it with a wobbly, trance-like vibe.
