Roger That - The Weekend EP

  • With a new vinyl-only offering from the Denver duo of Roger That and John Tyler, Playground sets its stall out confidently and quietly with their first release. The Weekend is a four-track EP from Roger That which doesn't so much knock on your door as shuffle unobtrusively onto your front porch and wait for you to stumble over it. In some online stores the tracks have names, but they weren't deemed of sufficient importance to add to either the sleeve or the vinyl itself—an introverted approach that carries over to the tracks themselves. The liveliest of the quartet is undoubtedly A1, but even that is only a shade more than a ponderous murmur, its bass lead stumbling around unconfidently. The overall mood of the EP may be relatively dark, but it's often lightened with colourful freckles, whether it's the frog-like grunts of A2 or sinister squelches of B2. It's music that has clearly taken time to craft, and is proof that you don't need to make noise in order for people to pay attention.
