Djebali - This Ultimate Dare

  • French producer Djebali launched his eponymous vinyl-only label back in 2011. He cites fellow Parisian Dan Ghenacia as an influence, and though the similarities between the two producers are clear enough, Ghenacia has trodden an increasingly accessible path while Djebali has burrowed more and more underground. His productions have always been relatively simple, groove-led affairs, and his latest release—the sixth on the label—is perhaps the most straightforward to date. "This Ultimate Dare" is utilitarian production at its most effective, little more than a bassline, some nicely layered percussion and an off-key hum. Its warmth and catchiness set it apart from a glut of similarly structured but vastly inferior deep house records. "Sun Rise Way" is more complex and cuter—almost comically so, with its tumbling bassline and mid-point digital bubbles—but while it's a pleasant enough, it doesn't have quite the same level of shoulder-twitching, foot-stepping infectiousness.
