Ben Sun - Your Footprints

  • The deep house sound of the Burrell Brothers is an obvious jump-off point for this accomplished EP from London-based Aussie Ben Sun, his second outing for Jimpster's Delusions of Grandeur. Despite the old school vibes, "Your Footprints" isn't some lazy pastiche, such are the urgency of its hi-hats, toms and clattering cowbells, which are counterpointed by doleful bass, sugary synths and vocals. "Affirmation" is a simpler affair, its territory marked out by a bouncy, metronomic motif and subtle snares. A wandering synth bass increases its intensity, punctured by carnival whistles; it releases its stranglehold momentarily, before reaching back in and grabbing tightly. There's little doubting that '80s British synth pop, especially early Depeche Mode, inspires Tevo Howard's reworking of "Your Footprints." The stalwart Chicago producer lashes galloping Vince Clarke synths to skeletal electro drums. It's imbued with an ambience that ditches 21st century surgical precision for something far more satisfyingly raw.
