Deep Space Orchestra - 10 4 EP

  • Deep Space Orchestra, the duo of Chris Barker and Si Murray, produce grown-up deep house from their lair in England's northwest. Following releases on Jimpster's Delusions Of Grandeur and their own label, Use Of Weapons, the next home for their loose-limbed sound is East London's Fly By Night. "The 10 4 Rule" recalls the raw, live-sounding approach of Dubtribe Soundsystem. An urgent analogue synth is joined by stripped-back bass jabs, which swirl up in tumult, before dropping back into the skeletal groove. Toby Tobias' remix goes on a main room assault, twisting the original into a quaking, acidic march complete with metallic synth stabs. There are some beautiful dubby keyboards and fidgety bass doing battle on "Keshik," offset by handclaps and congas. It's turned on its head by Riccio, who ups the trippy quotient with a nagging synth rattle, incoherent snares and a groove that sounds like it's been forced through a busted speaker.
