MRSK - Venger

  • Sometimes, it's the simplest—or simplest-sounding—tracks which work best. Skudge know this, which is why the duo have built their shadowy career on making, playing and releasing music that's distilled to its absolute basics. There have been exceptions to this aesthetic, of course, but MRSK's Venger isn't one of them. Just like the Swede's first 12-inch for Skudge Presents, it offers a particularly robust and direct take on techno. On the title track, a short, whirling motif is intensely held front and centre for almost the entire duration. Things don't get stale, however—elated pads swim between the track's bulky drums to take the edge off. It's the type of relentless groove which even the most footsore dancers should readily lock into. "Image Ctrl" shares a similar loping cadence with "Anchor Buoy," a track MRSK co-produced last year under the name Fishermen. Here, rustling percussion is interwoven with ominously de-tuned piano, and wild, wordless vocals range back and forth across the spectrum. Things feel more elaborate compared to the single-minded "Venger," but it's mostly an illusion, just a few well-forged elements punching well above their weight.
