Tom Taylor - These Things EP

  • It's taken Fina Records a relatively short period of time to reach its tenth release. Almost exactly two years since Mic Newman's inaugural EP, the Leeds label has adopted an adept A&R operation, cleverly acknowledging, while never pandering to, recent house music trends. Taking the imprint into double figures with a hefty six-track EP is local producer Tom Taylor. Ethereal opener "Twilight" escorts you across swathes of lush electronics. Holding off the drop until well into the fifth minute, it provides the release with a strong, seductive start. On remix duty, Jack Dixon keeps things simple, maintaining the original's emotive veneer but with a touch more dance floor swing. On "Don't Give Up," Taylor significantly lowers the pace and intensifies the atmosphere, making for an impassioned, uplifting roller. Normal service is resumed on piano house burner "This World," as Taylor marries classic, zesty chords with the dulcet tones of Luther Vandross to give the desired climactic effect. The dub strips away both piano and vox to leave a surprisingly engaging, groovier affair, while long time associates Clive Henry and Rui da Silva team up to offer the highlight of the release, this time replacing the piano with a chassis that oozes nothing but classy conceit.
