Kahwe - Driving Me Wild

  • Whoever's in charge of A&R at Anjuna—more specifically, Anjunadeep, their offshoot which dives into deep house waters—deserves a pay rise. Dusky's EP for the label a year ago led to an Essential Mix by the end of 2012 and created a right kerfuffle here on RA. Thankfully, the open-minded majority worked out that you don't judge a record by its label, which is excellent news for its creator, Kahwe, as the Driving Me Wild EP is very good indeed. Kahwe—20-year-old Leeds producer Joe Cowie—is a driving force behind Transmission Collective, one of the UK's more prodigious production teams. Their modus operandi is melodic deep house buttressed by tough percussion and innovative bass explorations. In the case of "Driving Me Wild" that means emotive, echo-laden pads, swollen chords, crackling percussion, and a breathy, ethereal vocal sample. The tougher, '90s house-leaning "Anything" grabs the briefest of rap vocals and bolts them onto thumping pianos, Chandler-esque chimes and twisted, post-dubstep bass drops. Finally, Kahwe lowers the tempo down on "Yew." Smouldering sunset house, it canters elegantly along, studded with ambient twinklings and a fuzzy, stoned bassline.
