Loops Haunt - ZENITH

  • With the ghost of jungle's past currently being summoned in the form of industrious soundscapes courtesy of PAN and Blackest Ever Black, the Bristol-based Black Acre make the timely delivery of Loops Haunt's ZENITH. Whereas producers signed to the aforementioned imprints have raided old rave cassettes to present the bygone genre's feral spirit within a minimalised context, the Dundee-hailing Scott Gordan bucks the trend by taking a far more visceral approach. Comprised of seven mini-tracks plastered together with gaffa tape abandon, the Scotsman's arcane opus for the Westcountry fold places primary focus on warping jungle's syncopated loops. This is best exemplified on the title track and "dltfaypily," tunes both defined by a bastardised grid of extended snare rolls. Offering percussive contrast, hip-hop interludes "mun Rhul" and "Galleon" are steeped in a gladiatorial grandeur reminiscent of the beats RZA laid down on GZA's Liquid Swords. Elsewhere, "Heal" and the intro "Fathom" sit closer to Brainfeeder's brand of West Coast glitch-core, with the closer "Hike" completing the EP in a blur of somber keys and mechanical gallop.
