Skirt - Bitten By The Black Dog

  • Bethany Skirt returns to Horizontal Ground, and this time she's brought The Black Dog to play. The Sheffield trio transform Skirt's "Collider" into a big room techno banger that eventually turns spectral, opening up things to include a tribal chant and gleaming synths by the time it concludes. It's end-of-the-night stuff if you play it all the way through and gripping middle-of-the-night stuff if you decide to cut it off before it goes all sparkly. Skirt takes up the whole of the B-side with originals. "Miismo" hums and whirrs with increasing menace for its six minutes, eventually revealing screaming strings near the finale. "Beatless Collision," meanwhile, begins as though a devilish orchestra is tuning up and only gets more frightening from there. You could call it a beautiful piece of swelling industrial, but beautiful doesn't seem like the most appropriate way to describe a track that ends with something that sounds like it's getting sanded down into oblivion.
