  • To mark their 20th vinyl release, the lads and lasses at Functional Breaks have release 2 cd’s full of functional magic from past and present. retro>future is the name, and the first cd sees Australian DJ Phil K mix 13 past tunes of the label in superb fashion. Disc two sees Ben & Lex compile 10 present cuts from the label, a showcase of things to come. The vocal stylings of Spoon Wizard’s “Shoe Monkey” begin disc one in style as the deep rumbling baselines of Frakkar’s mix of “Fists like this” soon get the mix into gear. DJ Killer provides a killer track with the acidic synths of “I Want Your Love”. The genius of Momu is behind the eerie sounds and broken beats of “Kitty Hawk” while Sensei cranks up the base with the very evil “Pimp Slap The Funk”. The driving baseline continues with “Static” by An-ten-nae while Frakkar’s excellent “Slide” is chosen to conclude the mix. Phil K has done exceptionally well with the tracks he has been given to work with. It’s pretty much mixed to perfection, and is a real treat. The future of Functional Breaks looks very promising based on the second disc of this release. The lovely “Keihatsu” by LP is certainly an early highlight while the dirty baselines and subtle melodies of “Cosa Nostra” by Ben & Lex is also sure to please. The quirky beats and chunky drums of Blue Effect’s “Flow” also deserve special mention as does the explosive nature of “Thunder” by DJ Killer. The very unique sounds of “Under Thunder” by Diversion Distraction conclude second disc. Overall it’s a very solid release by this great label. Definitely a showcase into the dirty sounds of Functional Breaks through a smooth and flawless mix of past classics, and a track by track story into the future of Functional. Worth a look.
