- There are few pairings in techno that stir nostalgia like British Murder Boys. A production and DJ collaboration between Birmingham originals Anthony "Surgeon" Child and Karl "Regis" O'Connor, the project peaked in the early '00s, coming to a well-documented end just a few years after its inception. Where The Pail Limbs Lie, the pair's first original release since 2005, arrives on Mute sublabel Liberation Technologies, and is the first British Murder Boys 12-inch housed outside Child's Counterbalance or Regis's Downwards imprint.
"Dead Sun" has all the aggressive hallmarks of a Surgeon and Regis joint venture, but comes off as more mellowed than a lot of their earlier work. The sounds are bundled with a simple but swinging rhythm that pauses only for a short breakdown at the track's midway point, with no significant peaks or troughs shifting the energy up or down.
"In Another Country" is a markedly different beast. Far from peak-time material, it plods along in the 120s with an introspective mood that would suit the early or late hours. While it has more moving parts than your average techno track, the B-side's hazy aesthetic is quite unlike anything they've released before—and is a quality addition to their scope.
