Tom Clark - Bad Habit

  • You're not going to find anything groundbreaking on Tom Clark's latest release for Highgrade, the label he co-owns. They aren't peaktime bangers desperate for your attention. Instead, the three tracks are the workhorses of clubland, tracks which settle into the groove early on and, bar the odd deviation, that's where they sit. These are the cement that sets are built with. The recurring synth motif on "Bad Habit" seemingly has a life of its own, breathing in and out, accompanied by a burbling undertow, a midtempo pace and a single-note drone. There's a more cutting edge to the dark house of "Children of the Night." With its drawn sabre sound effects and idiosyncratic aural tics (clanging pipes, snatches of machine gun hi-hat) it rapidly picks up the pace to sit at a jacking groove. While "Edgy Dream" shares some of the traits of the previous two tracks, it's the warmest, perkiest effort here, even breaking out into a bout of vicious bass attack midway through.
