ESHU - Timeless EP

  • ESHU's slow-burning take on techno has been marked by a keen eye for the little things so far, and there's plenty more of that approach on the group's third EP, Timeless. "MM" snaps, crackles and pops right from the start, easing into a crisp 4/4 pattern laden with cheery, dub-wise strands of melody. Still, at ten minutes in length it's a bit of a rambling ride, especially when compared to Echologist's stripped-back interpretation. That one gets right to the point, calling out to steppers with syncopated kicks and employing smoothly sustained tones to enhance the vibe of the original. Rounding out the record is the title track at B2, which like the original version of "MM" takes a long moment to find itself. "Timeless" is more satisfying for me, though, thanks to a ghastly organ vamp that creeps, ever so slowly, into the mix. Overall, the record might seem a bit more conventional than their prior work—it's more earthy, and less distinctively "far out" than either the Naturally Divine or Maan EPs—but ESHU certainly maintains enough emphasis on space and subtlety here for both fans and newcomers to enjoy.
