- Despite a name that suggests they're more interested in providing affordable residences than championing electronic music, Well Rounded Housing Project have actually been turning out firm and fair 4/4 beats for the best part of two years. Slowing things down considerably when compared to their previous output, their latest Slow Spectrum EP sees them present four varied cuts of house from a collection of relatively unknown, occasionally capable producers.
"Yello & Red" from Joonipah is lovely. As pedestrian an adjective as you might think that is, it really is the most appropriate one. It's an unchallenging tune, but exudes exactly the right amount of warmth and familiarity without ever edging close to mundane. Similarly Rhodes-heavy is Lambert Matthew's "Plasmoid," a spacey, neon-flecked affair that labours a little over its super-slow tempo and syncopated rhythm and probably doesn't do quite enough, although at less than four minutes it's a perfectly passable temporary distraction.
"Movin' On," meanwhile, is a shitload of happy, bouncy fun; like being at the fairground as an eight year-old after demolishing a stack of candy floss the size of your head. Things get a whole lot weirder for the final cut, with heavily distorted strings and heady atmospherics pitching "Rio" somewhere between lo-fi synth-pop and an '80s power ballad. It's a bit of a mess to be honest, but original in its own screechy way.
