- Chasing Kurt—the on-the-rise Giessen, Germany-based trio of Wojtek Kutschke, Lukas Poloczek and Pascal Vert—trade in an unfussy, warm and distinctly continental brand of deep house. Understated by nature, it can be a tough sound for producers to distinguish themselves within (crews as diverse as Innervisions and Smallville have their little corners more or less on lock), but on In the Air, their second 12-inch for Carry On, the trio takes a few steps toward setting themselves apart.
Just as they did on "Money," which found its way onto Maya Jane Coles's DJ-Kicks mix earlier this year, Chasing Kurt slow things way down on the title cut. Singer Lukas Poloczek turns in an another on-point vocal performance, but the group's production is notably stronger and more adventurous this time around. Ditto for "Galaxy Hero," a darker number whose slinky pace hides how tensely slamming its drums are. It's the remixes, however, that really take things to the next level. Phillip Lauer puts his considerable chops to good use on his "In the Air" remix, reimagining the original's melodic bedrock as a counter-rhythm and using a few key vocal chops for atmosphere. Deep Space Orchestra pitch "Galaxy Hero" up to a more standard speed, with rougher textures, a wide bassline, and bigger drums to match.
