Lakosa & iO - Home Early

  • Props to Kerri Chandler. He could easily have kept MadTech as a refuge for the brand of smart deep house he's known for, but Lakosa & iO's "Home Early" takes risks, especially among its remixes. The lead track is a garage-influenced deep house burner with a clever vocal treatment, the product of a freshly-minted partnership between London house producers Lakosa & iO. With heavy bass prods and rattling rimshots, it's got that zeitgeisty British feel—sounding like it could have been recorded any time over the last two decades and able to hold its own across a range of genres. West Norwood Cassette Library retains much of the original's vibe, but slices up the vocals UK garage-fashion before allowing it to strut off to Studio 54 for some soaring, Love Unlimited Orchestra-style disco action. Prodigious south London grime producer Pedro 123 then injects a bit of swagger into his reimagining of "Home Early," with a bassline that sounds like the world's largest elastic band being twanged. But eclectic as the remixes are, it's Lakosa & iO's genre-spanning original that's a must.
