Flow & Zeo - NY Candy

  • Brazilian duo Jose "Zeo" Guinle & Marian "Flow" Meirelles pull in some extra troops to assist their electro funk assault across a brace of twisty, disco-dripped house cuts. Joined first by compatriot Marcello VOR, "NY Candy"'s 1-2 punch is a pinging, coiled spring of a bassline and a clanging old school-style keyboard refrain. The mood that the latter engenders is helped by a vocal that's not a million miles away from Rickie Lee Jones' druggy ramblings on "Little Fluffy Clouds." And yet you can't shake the feeling that, despite threatening to on more than one occasion, it doesn't quite take off like it ought to. "Now You Know," where Zeo & Flow are accompanied by Velkro, has at its core a denture-wobbling bassline motif that nearly finds itself slipping off the lower register. Around it flitter almost imperceptible woody clicks, sonar pulses and 808 claps seemingly sliced in half. It's more demure than the A-side, but it's an instantly more rewarding outing.
