Hector - Hide

  • Hector made his debut on Tsuba back in 2010, and since then not much has changed in either camp. Tsuba still likes to champion chunky, restrained house and Hector is still damn good at making it. With this is mind, their reunion on the Hide EP is neither surprising nor unwelcome. "Hide" is actually one of the more melodic cuts from the Mexican producer to date, mostly thanks to an upbeat organ. The prominent lead avoids deep house cliché by acting more like a spirit-lifting bonus than the track's focus. The washy-synths and backward-facing bass call to mind a few of secretsundaze's recent releases, but with a bit more muscle. "Diano" is less exciting—a simple, loopy, drum heavy affair that's probably better described as a DJ tool—but as a digital-only release is perfectly functional. B-side track "Follow the Leader" is the EP's real highlight though. One-note basslines tend to divide opinion, but when they're delivered this well they can be irresistible, purposefully barraging onwards while a yearning female vocal does its very best to make you dangerously weak at the knees.
