Untold - Change in a Dynamic Environment Part 3

  • When Jack Dunning burst onto the scene at the last decade's end, his sound was almost disconcertingly fresh: dubstep had long sounded alien, but on cuts like "Anaconda" and "Just for You," Untold truly sounded out of this world, his low-end undulating without care through previously undiscovered dimensions. Dunning's spent much of his time since out-darking himself with face-smashing techno, but you could hear some switch flip with his "Change In A Dynamic Environment" series, his three-part return to his own Hemlock imprint. The first two EPs, released earlier this year, didn't really find Untold letting up, but with hints of retro-spacey melody seeping through on cuts like "Motion The Dance" and "Breathe," he signaled he might finally be clawing his way out of the pitch-black end-times bunker he'd been digging for himself. Which isn't to say Part 3 isn't plenty fierce. More subtle sound design and hints of color aside, Dunning is still making techno here; he's just finding more of the right moments to hold back on the onslaught. "Kane" kicks off as a straight-up post-punk tune, with bass guitar and tom rolls quietly ramping up tension. But rather than explode immediately, "Kane" blossoms: a downright pretty Mellotron melody warms up the beat before a squelchy bass finally forces the pastoral scene to implode. "Overdrive," as the title implies, has a rougher edge, but the organic, punk-club vibe remains, albeit with a healthy pinch of rave.
