Lee Webster - Freaky Bitches EP

  • Founded in 1996 by Kevin McKay, through the late '90s and early '00s Glasgow Underground put out an almost ridiculously consistent string of releases from Omid 16B, DJQ and a number of other house luminaries. Since returning last year, though, nothing has quite hit the same note. Until this EP, that is. In one respect, Freaky Bitches is a schizophrenic EP, the clear result of Lee Webster's non-committal attitude. This, however, is part of what makes it so appealing, especially given the adroit handling of the genres and sub-genres to which he turns his hand. "Detroit Cheeky Things" is a playfully bouncy, looped-up soul edit not at all dissimilar to Hot Natured's "Modern Amusement" from a couple of years back. "How We Did It" plows a bumpy path all the way to Chicago, skinny synths slithering carefully alongside its thunderous bass thud, while the sultry low-slunk funk of the title track will get juices flowing in just the right way. More brazen is Webster's heavily swung, squeakily-vocaled flourish "My Fantasy." Dance floor-based foreplay it may be, but like everything else on the EP it balances throwaway vocal hooks with polished production to just the right degree.
