Sasha Panic - The Trick

  • For Crime City Disco's fourth record, label owner Tobias Gullberg has enlisted Sasha Panic, a friend from his hometown of Malmö, Sweden. As before, sluggish house is the order of the day. But The Trick, Panic's debut record, is the funkiest thing the label has done to date. Thick, growling guitar absolutely dominates the original mix, sallying back and forth or cascading down the scale. Consequently, there's little room for much else, just a sequence of '80s-style synth stabs. As an idea, the whole thing feels pretty simple, but Panic implements it suavely, placing the stabs where they best augment the lopsided groove. Hans Berg's remix swaps out the bass for relaxed bongos and rim shots, and attempts to spin the rudimentary synth work into something more complex. Largely, however, his take feels eternally poised for takeoff, probably more a result of difficult remix stems than lack of skill. KLS' version overcomes this issue by adding new elements―a more modern low-end, a glassy synth line―and as a result, is able to stand alongside the original as an equal, despite excising the pivotal bassline.
