25 Places - Reference

  • As far as I can tell this is a debut release for 25 Places, AKA Tayfun Sarier and Stefan Rijsmus, two producers from Rotterdam. The pair dodges the famed electro sound of the city in favour of a much more pan-European deep house flavour that's friendly and familiar. Maybe a little too familiar, in fact: "Reference One" and "Reference Two" are pleasant and polished enough, with standard organ chords, an airy, bouncy groove and the odd female cry of "wooo" to get the juices flowing. But nothing screams "essential" here, even if it's never quite derivative enough to be wholly unlikable. The busier, more muscular "Seen Today" ebbs closer to standout territory and sounds something akin to Bicep's recent US house banger, while the languid "Slow Bender" brings you back down to earth with a subtle trumpet laced sumptuousness.
